As the school year winds down, districts begin shifting their focus from day-to-day implementation and service delivery to reflecting on the year鈥檚 outcomes and using those insights to guide planning for the upcoming school year. Best practices in analysis are rooted in reviewing and contextualizing end-of-year data鈥攊dentifying what worked, where improvement is needed, and where to prioritize efforts moving forward.

Among the most critical areas of review is college and career readiness (CCR), a domain that has taken on heightened importance in recent years as many state legislatures and education departments have formalized requirements for reporting and showing progress on a much wider range of CCR accountability indicators than in previous years. Go Beyond Graduation Data and Surface-Level Metrics: Most commonly, districts share graduation rates, college acceptances, and scholarship totals as the key statistics to convey CCR success for a school year or cohort of students. These figures, however, ignore large swaths of powerful data and miss many facts of CCR work taking place in schools every day.聽Communicating deeper measures including increases in industry certification attainment, growth in work-based learning participation, the number of partnerships between local businesses and schools, or rate of students who reached their personalized learning plan goals provide much more nuanced and meaningful insights for stakeholders. Districts should make efforts to publicize stories about these partnerships and explicitly note the benefits to students and businesses鈥搃ncluding why they chose to get involved and what they have gained from the experience. Stories might note how an internship program allowed a business to fill roles that have been plagued by worker shortages or hear from a student who developed real-world skills through on-site training. These stories inspire other employers to seek out district partnerships and reinforce the district鈥檚 commitment to successful career readiness and workforce development efforts.聽

Use a Variety of Communication Channels: CCR efforts align with a large spectrum of district goals and are relevant for an incredibly broad range of community stakeholders including families, students, educators, business leaders, and civic partners. In order to reach this large cross section of individuals and groups, it is important to utilize a wide and diverse mix of communication channels including social media, district and school newsletters, local news outlets, school markees, websites, and community forums. Holding a school board workshop or presentation that includes student, educator, and business voices can also create a forum for deeper analysis and impact sharing. Find ways to tailor the messaging to align with each channel and audience in order to build greater awareness, strengthen community support, increase the visibility of CCR efforts, and invite broader buy-in from stakeholders across the community.

Include Information about How Individuals and Organizations Can Get Involved: Too often, families, local employers, and community members are unaware of the many opportunities to support college and career readiness efforts in their local schools. To maximize the impact of these efforts to spotlight CCR outcomes, include clear information about how others can get involved along with the success stories. Use these moments of visibility to outline tangible ways for families, community members, and industry partners to participate鈥攚hether through volunteering, mentoring, hosting students, or serving on advisory councils. Include links to interest forms, partnership surveys, or upcoming events that welcome engagement along with contact information for program leads who can help guide future participation. Beyond external partners, districts and schools can also use these stories to inform students and families about the CCR opportunities available to them and how to access programs, supports, and next steps鈥攈elping ensure every student is aware of and empowered to take advantage of the full range of CCR opportunities.

Highlighting CCR achievements allows districts to showcase the unique programs, partnerships, and pathways that distinguish them from other options. These stories demonstrate that students are not just being taught information to earn grades鈥攖hey are being prepared for their postsecondary future in meaningful and actionable ways.

More importantly, CCR outcomes offer tangible incentives for families and the broader community to remain invested in鈥搊r get involved with鈥搕heir local schools. Parents want to know that their children are gaining skills that will serve them in the future. Employers want a pipeline of capable, career-ready graduates. Students want to feel that what they are learning today has relevance and purpose for tomorrow.
